Those of you who love golf must be highly familiar with the PGA Tour. It is the most prestigious championship in the world of golf, with top professional golfers from all around the world competing for the ultimate title. What most golf fans don’t know is the fact that there are several different PGA Tour event categories; that is what we are going to discuss in this article.
PGA Tour Majors are the main set of events in this competition. The four top competitions, which are the the Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, The (British) Open Championship, and the PGA Championship, are classified as Majors and each receive 100 OWGR points automatically.
Next, we have the World Golf Championships or WGC. WGC is a set of events co-sanctioned by the International Federation of PGA Tours. It is a golf tour designed to attract top golfers from all around the world including those who are not members of the PGA. A lot of amateur golfers use the WGC as a good starting point to join the official PGA Tour.
There are two tournaments that are rated as Unique. The first one is of course the SBS Championship, the first tournament of the season. The other golf tournament rated as Unique is the The Players Championship. This competition attracts the best professional golfers from all round the world and is given 80 OWGR points.
Aside from the event categories we’ve discussed earlier, there are also events categorized as Invitational including the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Verizon Heritage, the Memorial Tournament and the AT&T National.
